Statistics About the Area
  • We cover an area of 1500 square km.
  • This area has roughly 100,000 people
  • 57% of whom are under 19
  • 35% are HIV positive
  • Almost everyone must collect water from communal water pumps or from dams, in winter travelling very far.
  • Almost no-one has electricity.
  • An unemployment rate of 90%.
  • 50% of households live on less than R200 per month ($30).
 
Community and Home-based Care Statistics
Recent figures showed that although statisticly there should be around 2,000 deaths per year, the hospital only dealt with 1,000 last year. That means 1,000 deaths happen unrecorded at home. Many, many people can't afford to access treatment due to travel costs to clinics and hospital - which is where our community and home-based care project comes in. The following table shows our patient numbers and stats for the past few months:
