Income Generating Projects

Motivation

As a locally based NGO we are here for the long term and we recognise that to make headway against the effects of HIV we must also address poverty and joblessness.

Job Creation

We employ more people in Ingwavuma than any other organisation, apart from the local hospital. Each person employed helps supports an extended family which leads to better medical care and opportunities for education that were not there before and so combating the AIDS crisis even more.

Self-sustainability

Our secondary goal for the income generating projects is for IOC to become self-sustaining in terms of the unrestricted funds it uses. We will still take grants for specific pieces of work, but the future of the organisation will be ensured. To this end, and to ensure the success of the income generating projects they are overseen by our Treasurer, Paul Dean, our operations manager, Vee Dlamini and our food-garden specialist, Thando Mbhamali each of whom have considerable experience and skills in this area.
Examples:
If we get a grant to buy school uniforms for orphans, we can contract our sewing group to make them thus providing income for carers as well as uniforms for orphans.

Our food gardens are growing food for the local supermarket, increasing choice and lowering local prices while supporting themselves and the orphans they care for.
