Costings
This will be our third centre since the inception of Ingwavuma Orphan Care. Situated in such an undeveloped rural area, it is not possible to buy property, but necessary to build from scratch. The first 2 buildings were designed by the director and built by local labourers (with the director buying and fetching building supplies, even fetching water from the local river herself). However, the decision was made to make this a professionally designed and well constructed centre which should serve the organisation and wider community for many years.
Staff from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, an architect's firm in the UK, became excited about the concept and drew up initial plans, roping in many other professionals for advice. This was all done free of charge.
The architectural work has now been taken over by Rodney Harber, a well experienced South African architect. ProjectBuild, a non-profit building contractor, has been commissionned to carry out the building work.
So far:
- The outbuilding plans have been costed out; guards' house, 13 garages and storerooms for building and gardenning projects. These will cost in the region of R1 million.
- The community centre with offices, meeting rooms, storerooms, reception and staff room will cost R2.5 million.
- The hospice buildings- pending..
