Governance

By Ann Dean - Posted on 08 April 2009

We are a voluntary organisation. We are registered as a non-profit organisation with the Department of Social Development (NPO 010-354) and for tax purposes are a public benefit organisation with exemption from VAT and SDL.

Our organisation is ultimately controlled by a membership. This is made up of three groups:
1) Paying members who are private individuals or companies who wish to support the work of IOC
2) Beneficiary members (drawn from the beneficiaries we support) to give them direct input to our management.
3) Staff members (maximum of 20% of membership) to give them ownership of their work.

We currently have 13 paying members, 7 staff members and 20 beneficary members. The beneficiary members include children and they are not shy to contribute in meetings!

The members then vote for a Management Board. Our current board includes:

  • Hugo Stewart - Chairman
  • Hlengiwe Mthimkhulu - Secretary
  • Sandra Wilson - Treasurer
  • Nigel Frost
  • Jabulani Tembe
  • Michael Nyawo
  • Ann Dean (ex officio- Director)

The board meets quarterly, but is available by email and phone for consultation and input at all times.

Day to day management of the project is handled by the staff management team who meet weekly. The organisation also has many other committees made up of various combinations of staff covering issues such as health and safety, events planning, scholarship review, housing, funding etc.
